"This is a painful but necessary decision, and I stand by it."
The India no. and world no. 5 women player GM Koneru Humpy shared the shocking news of her withdrawal from the FIDE Candidates 2026 scheduled to be held in Cyprus next week. The FIDE Candidates is considered one of the strongest and top tournaments in the world of chess. The winner of the tournament gets a direct ticket to challenge the current world chess champion.
The 38-year-old Indian super-star player is not only one of the best players but also an inspiration to many. On 22nd March, 2026 she wrote -
" After deep reflection, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament. No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances. This is a painful but necessary decision, and I stand by it. "
But why the decision?
Lets take a step back and try to understand the situation we are in as of today. There is turmoil and there is uncertainty all around the world. As of March 23, 2026, the global security landscape is marked by a significant and dangerous escalation in the Middle East, alongside grinding wars of attrition in Europe and Africa.
The most critical development this week is the direct conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has rapidly expanded into a regional war. Understanding this, it can be a very conscious and logical decision. The commitments and the assurance from the organising body may not have been enough for Koneru to leave home in doubt. She has family, her children and as a mother, the safety of oneself and family members come before any decision in life.
What do you think about it? Let us know.
